Beyond cultural rules: learning the art of cultural humility!

On September 25, the Faculty of English Language at Lac Hong University (LHU) hosted the ASU Master Class: “Going Beyond Cultural Competence: Communities of Care Through Cultural Humility.” Intercultural communication isn't about memorizing stereotypes—it starts with reflecting on ourselves before interpreting the world around us.

5 Key Takeaways from the Workshop:

1. “Same country ≠ Same culture”: Never reduce individuals to cultural labels.

2. Shift from “I know” to “I wonder”: Replace quick assumptions with genuine curiosity.

3. The 4 Core Pillars: – Keep learning – Look inward – Notice power – Center others.

4. Check your “Default Settings”: Re-examine personal biases before judging others.

5. The T.I.M.E Framework: Apply Trust, Integrity, Motivation, and Emotion to navigate real-world communication conflicts.

The session wrapped up with personal commitments to listen actively and create inclusive spaces for every voice. A huge thank-you to our lecturers and students for bringing such vibrant energy to the room. See you at our next event!
